"I respect them after playing them," Kemling said of the Eagles, who have a brand new starting five. "It takes a lot of heart to hustle like they do." East junior guard Ellie Carter hit 5-of-6 shots for 11 of the Eagles' 14 points in the first quarter. South found itself trailing by one after shooting 30 percent from the floor.

Favorite: St. Mary’s
Contenders: Lamar, Ellicott
Top players: Payden Ackermon, Trinidad, 5-7, Sr.; Britney Bunker, Ellicott, 5-7, Sr.; Laney Burns, Rye, 5-8, So.; Ellie Carter, Rye, 5-5, So.; Kristen DiPaola, Trinidad, 5-10, Sr.; Brittany Higgins, Lamar, 5-8, Jr.; Jesse Hines, Lamar, 5-7, Sr.; Ashley Miller, Ellicott, 5-11, Sr.; Rachel Niles, St. Mary’s, 5-8, Jr.; Jamie Rozell, Ellicott, 5-5, Sr.; Julia Saenz, St. Mary’s, 5-6, Sr.; Chrislyn Tate, Lamar, 5-7, Jr.; Christina Whitelaw, St. Mary’s, 5-8, So.
Outlook: After finishing sixth in state last year, St. Mary’s believes it has the talent to win it all this season. The Pirates bring back nine of their top 10 players, including standout junior Rachel Niles. Lamar will battle it out for the league crown as the Savages bring back an explosive duo in Brittany Higgins and Jesse Hines. Ellicott also should be formidable with all five starters returning from last year’s 15-win club. Senior Ashley Miller could average a double-double after putting up 16.5 points and 9.5 rebounds as a junior. Rye has a new coach and an emerging star in sophomore Ellie Carter. Trinidad will be a factor with talented Payden Ackerman and Kristen DiPaola leading the way.
